Rakesh is on 9th position from upwards and on 38th position from downwards in a class. How many students are in the class?

Total students =(Rakesh’s position from upwards + Rakesh’s position from downwards)–1
=(9+38)–1 =46

Hemang is 16th from the top and twelfth from the bottom in merit in the class. How many students are there in the class?

Total number of students in the class =(16+12)–1 =27

Roshan ranked 11th from the top and thirty-one from the bottom in a class. How many students are there in the class?

Total number of students in the class =(11+31)–1 =41

Sunita ranked 11th from the top and 27th from the bottom in a class. How may student are in the class?

Number of students in the class =(11+27)–1 =37

Manish is fourteenth from the right end in a row of 40 boys. What is his position from the left end?

Manish's position from the left end = (Total boys – Manish's position from the right end) + 1
= (40 – 14) + 1 = 27th

Vijay’s position is 14th from upwards in a class of 43 students. What will be his position from downwards?

Vijay’s position from downwards = (43 – 14) + 1 = 30th

Ram and Sham are ranked 13th and 14th respectively is a class of 23. What are their ranks from the last respectively?

Rank of Ram from the last = (23 – 13) + 1 = 11
and Rank of Shyam from the last = (23 – 14) + 1 = 10

Mohan and Ramesh are ranked seventh and eleventh respectively from the top in a class of 41 students. What will be their respective ranks from the bottom in the class?

Rank of Mohan from the bottom = (41 – 7) + 1 = 35th
Rank of Ramesh from the bottom = (41 – 11) + 1 = 31st

Ravi is 7 ranks ahead of Sumit in a class of 39. If Sumit’s rank is seventeenth from the last, what is Ravi’s rank from the start?

Sumit is 17th from the last and Ravi is 7 ranks ahead of Sumit.
So, Ravi is (17+7) =24th from the last.
Ravi’s rank from the start = (39 – 24) + 1 = 16th

In a class of 20 students, Alisha’s rank is 15th from the top. Manav is 4 ranks above Alisha. What is Manav’s rank from the bottom?

Manav’s rank from the top = 15 – 4 = 11th
Manav’s rank from the bottom = (20 – 11) + 1 = 10th

In a class of forty students, Samir’s rank from the top is twelfth. Alok is eight ranks below Samir. What is Alok’s rank from the bottom?

Samir’s rank from the top is 12th. Alok is eight ranks below Samir.
So, Alok’s rank from the top is 12+8 = 20th
Alok’s rank from the bottom = (40 – 20) + 1 = 21st

In a row of 21 girls, when Monika was shifted by four place towards the right, she became 12th from the left end. What was her earlier position from the right end of the row?

Monika was shifted by four-place towards the right, she became 12th from the left end.
Monika's earlier position from the left = 12 – 4 = 8th
Monika's earlier position from the right = (21 – 8) + 1 = 14th

The change of place by Monika can be shown as under:

In a row at a bus stop, A is 7th from the left and B is 9th from the right. Both of them interchange their positions and thus A becomes 11th from the left. How many people are there in that row?

After interchanging their positions:
Position of A from left = 11th
Positions of A form right = 9th
Total no. of people in the row = (9 + 11) – 1 = 19

In a row of children, Dipa is fifth from the left and Vijay is sixth from the right. When they interchange their places among themselves, Dipa becomes thirteenth from the left. Then, what will be Vijay’s position from the right?

After interchanging their positions:
Dipa's position from the left = 13th
Dipa's position from the right = 6th
Total no. of people in the row = (13+6) – 1 = 18
Vijay’s position from the right = (18–5) + 1 = 14th

Quicker method:
Present position of Vijay = Difference of two positions of Dipa + previous position of Vijay
= (13 – 5) + 6 = 14th

In a row of boys, Suresh is seventh from the left and Rohit is twelfth from the right. If they interchange their positions, Suresh becomes twenty-second from the left. How many boys are there in a row?

After interchanging their positions:
Suresh's position from the left = 22nd
Suresh's position from the right = 12th
Total no. of boys in a row = (22+12) – 1 = 33

In a row of girls, Rita and Monika occupy ninth place from the right end and tenth place from the left end respectively. If they interchange their places, then Rita and Monika occupy seventeenth place from the right and eighteenth place from the left respectively How many girls are there in the row?

After interchanging their positions:
Monika’s new position is the same as Rita’s earlier position
Monika's position from the left = 18th
Monika's position from the right = 9th
Total no. of girls in the row = (18+9) – 1 = 26

In a line of boys, Ganesh is 12th from the left and Rajan is 15th from the right. They interchange their positions. Now, Rajan is 20th from the right. What is the total number of boys in the class?

After interchanging their positions:
Rajan's position from the right = 20th
Rajan's position from the left = 12th
Total no. of boys in the class = (12 + 20) – 1 = 31
Quicker method:
Total students = (Previous position of Ganesh + Present position of Rajan) – 1
= (12 + 20) – 1 = 31

In a row of thirty-five children, M is the fifteenth from the right end and there are ten children between M and R. What is R’s position from the left end of the row?

R's position can be either left of M or right of M. So, R’s position can’t be determined.

In a queue, Vijay is fourteenth from the front and Jack is seventeenth from the end, while Mary is exactly in between Vijay and Jack. If Vijay be ahead of Jack and there be 48 persons in the queue, how many persons are there between Vijay and Mary?

Number of persons between Vijay and Jack = 48 – (14 + 17) = 17
Now, Mary lies in the middle of these 17 persons i.e., 9th
So, the number of persons between Vijay and Mary = 8

In a class of 10 girls and 20 boys, Jaya’s rank is ‘4’ among the girls and ‘18’ in the class. What is Jaya’s rank among the boys in the class?

Jaya’s rank among the class is 18. So, 17 boys and girls are ahead of Jaya.
Jaya’s rank among the girls is 4. So, 3 girls are ahead of Jaya.
Hence, (17–3) =14 boys are ahead of Jaya.
Thus, Jaya’s rank among the boys is 15.

In a class of 45 students, among those students who passed, Anmol secured 11th position from upwards and 15th from downwards. How many students failed?

Total passed students = (11+15)–1 = 25
Failed Students = 45–25 =20

Malay Pratap is on the 13th position from the starting and on the 17th position from the end in his class. He is on 8th position  from the starting and on 13th position from the end among the students who passed. How many students failed?

Total students in the class = (Malay’s ranking from starting + Malay’s ranking from end) – 1
= (13 + 17) – 1 = 29
Similarly, number of passed students = (8 + 13) – 1 = 20
Thus, number of failed students = 29 – 20 = 9

Manisha ranked 16th from the top and 29th from the bottom among those who has passed an examination. Six boys did not participate in the examination and five failed in it. How many boys were there in the class?

Number of boys who passed = (16 + 29) – 1 = 44
Total number of boys in the class = 44 + 6 + 5 = 55

In a queue, A is 18th from the front while B is 16th from the back. If C is 24th from the front and is exactly in the middle of A and B, then how many persons are there is the queue?

A is 18th from front and C is 24th from the back
Number of persons between A and C = 5.
Since C is exactly in the middle of A and B, so number of persons between C and B=5
Number of persons between A and B =5+1+5 =11
Thus, number of persons in the queue = (18 + 11 + 16) =45

In a row of 40 girls, when Komal was shifted to her left by 4 places her number from the left end of the row became 10. What was the number of Swati from the right end of the row if Swati was three places to the right of Komal’s original positions?

On shifting 4 places to the left, Komal is 10th from the left end of the row.
Thus, Komal's original position was 14th from the left end.
Swati is 3 places to the right of Komal’s original positions.
Clearly, Swati is 14 + 3 = 17th from the left end.
Number of girls to the right of Swati = (40 – 17) = 23.
Thus, Swati is 24th from the right end of the row.

In a row of 40 students facing North, Kailash is 6th to the left of Soman. If Soman is 30th from the left end of the row, how far is Kailash from the right end of the row?

Kailash's position from the left = 30 – 6 = 24th
Kailash’s position from the right = (40 – 24) + 1 = 17th

In a class of 60, where girls are twice that of boys, Kamal ranked seventeenth from the top. If there are 9 girls ahead of Kamal, how many boys are after him in rank?

Girls are twice of Boys. So, the numbers of boys are 20 and the numbers of girls are 40.
Number of students behind Kamal in rank (60 – 17) = 43
Number of girls ahead of Kamal in rank = 9
Number of girls behind Kamal in rank = (40 – 9) = 31
Thus, the number of boys behind Kamal in rank = (43 – 31) = 12

If you count 21 letters in the English alphabet from the end and 20 letters from the beginning, which letter will exactly appear in the middle of the sequence thus formed?

The 21st letter in the English alphabet from the end is 27 –21 = 6, i.e., F
The 20th letter in the English alphabet from the beginning is T
The number of letters between F and T is 13
The letter exactly in the middle of F and T = F+7 = M

In the first and second digits in the sequence, 5 9 8 1 3 2 7 4 3 8 are interchanged. Also, the third and fourth digits, the fifth and sixth digits and so on, which digit would be the seventh counting to your left?

The new sequence becomes 9 5 1 8 2 3 4 7 8 3.
Counting to the left, the seventh digit is 8.
