What is SSC?
SSC (Staff Selection Commission) is an organization under Government of India to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices.
Exams Conducted by SSC
Staff Selection Commission conduct competitive exams for recruitment to both Group C and Group B (non-gazetted – both technical and non-technical) posts in departments of Government of India and subordinate offices except those for which recruitment is made by the Railway Recruitment Boards.
SSC conducts exams for many posts every year. All the candidates are selected through a procedure which includes examinations followed by interview. Some of the jobs conducted by SSC are very prestigious in the government sector. Once you secure a seat in these government sector jobs, you can lead a comfortable life with a promising future.
Popular Exams:
- CGL (Combined Graduate Level): The posts for which large number of vacancies exists through Graduate Level are Assistant Grade, Auditors/ Inspectors of Income Tax/Central Excise, Sub-Inspectors in Central Police Organisations (Assam rifles, BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB) and CBI, /Upper Division Clerks, Divisional Accountants etc.

- CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level): This Exam to recruit basically lower division clerks and data entry operators in various government departments.

- MTS (Multi-Tasking Staff): This exam is to recruit subordinate staff in various central government departments.
Qualification: Matriculation - Junior Engineer Examination: The recruitment is done for engineers in Central Water Commission, Department of Posts, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineering Services etc.
Qualification: Degree/diploma - Stenographer (Grade C and Grade D): This recruitment is carried out by SSC for recruiting stenographers in various central government offices as well as attached subordinate offices.
Qualification: 10+2 with stenography skills. - SI in Delhi Police, CAPF and ASI in CISF: The posts for which large number of vacancies exists are Delhi Police, Central Armed Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Border Security Force (BSF), ITBP etc.

- Constable (GD) Examination: SSC recruits constables in forces such as BSF, ITBP, Assam Rifles, CRPF, SSB, NIA etc.
Qualification: Matriculation - Junior Hindi Translator: SSC to recruit translators in various organizations of the government.
Qualification: A graduate with Hindi or English
Apart from all these regular examinations, SSC often comes up with various advertisements for a number of posts throughout the year.
History of SSC
The Estimates committee in the Parliament recommended the setting up of a Service Selection Commission in its 47th report (1967–68) for conducting examinations to recruit lower categories of posts. Later, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, on 4 November 1975 Government of India constituted a commission called Subordinate Service Commission. On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as Staff Selection Commission. New constitution and functions of Staff Selection Commission came into effect from 1 June 1999.
Headquarters and Regional Offices of SSC
SSC has its headquarters located at New Delhi. At present it has seven Regional and two Sub-Regional Offices. These Regional/Sub-Regional Offices are responsible for receipt & processing of applications for various examinations, issue of admit cards to the candidates, conducting the Interviews/PETs (wherever required) either at the Regional Headquarters or other major cities within the regions. Each Regional office is headed by a Regional Director and each Sub-Regional office is headed by a Deputy Director.
